An individual Pygmy Sperm Whale was found dead and washed ashore by the residents of Ilijan, Batangas City, August 5, 2020.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 4A (BFAR 4A) – Regional Fisheries Laboratory (RFL) and Batangas Inland Fisheries Technology Outreach Station (BIFTOS) through coordination with the Provincial Fisheries Office (PFO)-Batangas responded to the stranded marine mammal as local authorities turned it over to them for further investigations. With a size of 2.2m and weighing 150kg., the said mammal was classified as an Adult, Male, Pygmy Sperm Whale (Kogia breviceps).
The necropsy examination show severe infection of the lungs resulting to death. It is also reported that the pygmy sperm whale has water on its lungs, losing its buoyancy that resulted to drowning. The carcass of the dead whale was immediately buried to avoid contamination.
The responders of the said incident were Dr. Marco Espiritu and Mr. Daniel dela Rama of BFAR4A-RFL; Mr. Marciano Ariel Yber of BIFTOS, and Mr. Ryan Daryl Peñalosa of PFO-Batangas and in coordination with the local officials of Barangay Ilijan, Batangas City.
